eSIM & SIM Cards for Latvia: Who Actually Needs One
Plenty of travellers buy mobile data for Latvia that they already had for free. Here's the short version of who needs it, who doesn't, and what the alternative costs.
Quick Answer
If you're on an EU or EEA phone plan, you need nothing — Roam Like At Home covers Latvia on your normal allowance. If you're coming from the US, Canada or Australia, an eSIM will cost a fraction of your carrier's roaming rate. UK travellers fall in between and should check whether their provider reinstated roaming fees after Brexit.
Riga also has genuinely widespread free WiFi, so for a short city-only trip you can often manage without any data at all.

The only thing that matters is where your phone plan is from — not where you're flying from, and not which Latvian network is best.
Travelling on an EU or EEA plan
Roam Like At Home applies. Your domestic allowance works in Latvia at no extra charge, on the same terms you have at home. Buying an eSIM here is spending money to replace something you already have.
Travelling on a UK plan
UK networks are no longer bound by EU roaming rules. Several reintroduced daily roaming fees after Brexit; others kept EU roaming included. A daily fee over a week generally costs more than an eSIM, so it's worth the two minutes it takes to look up your specific tariff.
Travelling from the US, Canada, Australia or beyond
Home-carrier international roaming for this region is typically charged at a daily rate that dwarfs the cost of a local data plan. This is the group an eSIM genuinely saves money for, and the saving over a week-long trip is usually substantial.
If You're in the Third Group
An eSIM is installed before you fly and connects the moment you land — no kiosk queue, no swapping out your home SIM, no risk of losing the tiny plastic tray somewhere over the Baltic. Latvia-specific plans are cheap; if you're combining Riga with Tallinn or Vilnius, a regional Europe plan usually works out better than three separate country plans.
See Latvia eSIM PlansThe Networks, and Why It Barely Matters
Latvia has three operators: LMT, Tele2 and Bite. LMT is the largest and generally posts the widest coverage and fastest average speeds, with Bite and Tele2 close behind.
In practice the differences are academic for a visitor. Latvia is flat, compact and densely covered, so 4G is close to universal — including on the roads out to Sigulda, Jūrmala and the coast. 5G exists but is concentrated in Riga and a handful of other spots, and it is not something to choose a plan over. Whichever network your eSIM provider partners with, you will have signal where you're going.
You Might Not Need Data At All
Riga's free WiFi coverage is better than most European capitals of its size. Cafés and restaurants expect you to use theirs, hotels include it, the airport has it, and much of public transport carries it. On a two- or three-day city break where you're never far from a café, downloading an offline map before you leave genuinely covers most of what you'd want data for.
Data starts earning its keep the moment you leave the city — live navigation on the way to Kuldīga or Cape Kolka, checking train times back from Sigulda, or calling a Bolt to the airport at six in the morning.
Physical SIM vs eSIM
A prepaid SIM from LMT, Tele2 or Bite is cheap and easy to find — the airport, shopping centres, kiosks across the city. If you're staying a fortnight or need a Latvian number for anything local, it's a reasonable option and often the better value per gigabyte.
For a short trip the eSIM wins on friction rather than price. It's set up at home, active on landing, and doesn't involve finding a shop, showing ID, or keeping your home SIM somewhere safe for a week. Your phone also has to support eSIM — most handsets from the last five years or so do, but it's worth confirming before you buy rather than after.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an eSIM for Latvia?
It depends entirely on where your phone plan is from. If you're on an EU or EEA plan, Roam Like At Home means your normal allowance works in Latvia at no extra cost, so you need nothing. If you're travelling from the US, Canada, Australia or elsewhere outside Europe, an eSIM is far cheaper than your carrier's international roaming. UK travellers sit in between and should check their specific plan.
Does my UK phone work in Latvia?
It will connect, but whether it's free depends on your provider. Since Brexit, UK networks are no longer bound by EU roaming rules and several reintroduced daily roaming charges, while others still include EU roaming. Check your plan's specific terms before you fly — a daily roaming fee across a week-long trip usually costs more than an eSIM.
Which mobile network is best in Latvia?
LMT is the largest operator and generally has the widest, fastest coverage, with Tele2 and Bite close behind. In practice all three give near-universal 4G across Latvia's flat, well-connected territory, so network choice matters much less than it would in a mountainous country. 5G exists but is concentrated in Riga.
Is there free WiFi in Riga?
Widely, yes. Cafés, restaurants, hotels, Riga Airport, the Central Market's newer sections and much of public transport offer free WiFi, and Riga is generally well covered. For a short city-only trip you can get by on WiFi alone — mobile data matters most if you're heading out to the countryside or relying on live navigation.
Can I buy a physical SIM card in Riga?
Yes — prepaid SIMs from LMT, Tele2 and Bite are sold at the airport, in shopping centres and at kiosks around the city, and they're inexpensive. The trade-off is time: you buy it after you land, whereas an eSIM is installed before you leave and works the moment you switch your phone on at the gate.
